Additional Learning Needs

More Able and Talented Pupils

We will ensure that enriched curriculum opportunities and extended learning experiences are available to nurture the abilities and talents of all pupils. This will enable those children who are more able and talented to fulfil their potential.

Special Educational Needs

A child has Special Educational Needs if he or she has a learning difficulty, which calls for Special Educational Provision to be made for him or her (1981 Education Act).

A child has a learning difficulty if he/she:

Mrs E. Williams provides Learning Support for pupils that have been identified as having special needs. Mrs E. Williams is the Coordinator for SEN.

Needs are initially identified as a result of information received from parents, or observation by a class teacher.

Regular special needs team meetings are held to discuss and monitor the progress of children on the special needs register. Parents play an integral part in all meetings or discussions.

Mrs Janet Jones is the Link Governor for Special Educational Needs.

Sex Education

Aspects of Sex Education are taught through our Personal and Social Education Scheme of Work. It is our policy to answer all questions with honesty and accuracy (appropriate to the age of the pupil).

Processes of life is a component of the National Curriculum for Science and is therefore a part of our science curriculum.

The school nurse visits school to discuss issues such as growing up, any worries/concerns etc and speaks to both boys and girls. This is a valuable opportunity for the pupils to ask any questions they have. A video is shown and leaflets are handed out. Further information regarding the visit by the school nurse can be obtained from the Headteacher if required.

Topic Work

This area of study incorporates aspects of English, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Art, History and Geography. Pupils develop an investigative approach to their work, which enables them to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes required in each respective subject area. A topic approach is mainly adopted in the Infant department.

Homework

All pupils are encouraged to practice, extend and broaden their reading at home and support of parents is vitally important in this area.

In the Juniors, formal Homework is set and the children are also encouraged to undertake extensions of schoolwork at home. The learning of Times Tables at home is encouraged.

Cycling Proficiency

Pupils over 10 years of age are encouraged to participate in the scheme, which usually operates in the Autumn Term. A cycling helmet must be worn.

Sporting Aims

During the school year 2008 – 2009 we aim to continue to provide a football and netball club (After School Clubs) and to enter tournaments (as available). We also aim to achieve the Football Association Wales (FAW) Accredited Schools Programme.
