The Curriculum
The Aims and Objectives of the school listed earlier will be achieved through the Curriculum offered to the children at school.
From September 2008 our Nursery and Reception children will be adopting The Foundation Phase framework for children’s learning. The framework sets out a curriculum that:
- Has at its centre the holistic development of children and their skills across the curriculum.
- Promotes learning through first-hand experiential activities that include play/active learning.
- Is planned as a progressive framework which covers four years (3-7 years) to meet the diverse needs of all children, including those who are at an earlier stage of development and those who are more able.
- Involves indoor and outdoor environments that are fun, exciting, stimulating and safe.
- Is appropriate for children in Wales.
We are currently working with our Local Education Authority to pilot the Foundation Phase approaches within our Infant Department (Years 1 & 2).
The children have an On-entry Assessment in Nursery and Baseline Assessment in Reception. Information relating to these assessments is shared with parents.
The 1996 Education Act states that the school is obliged to teach the following Core and Foundation Subjects:
Core
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
Non-core
- Welsh
- History
- Geography
- Technology
- Information Technology
- Art
- Physical Education
- Music
Religious education must also be taught and a daily act of collective worship must take place.
Each of the curriculum areas will be covered over two Key Stages:
Key Stage 1/Foundation Phase
- Ages 5 – 7 (Years 1 & 2) -
Teacher Assessment at the end of Year 2.
Key Stage 2
- Ages 7 – 11 (Years 3, 4, 5, 6) - Teacher Assessment at the end of Year 6.
